Pre-employment ScreeningPre employment or Pre placement Screening is used to identify at the earliest opportunity those employees who may have an underlying medical condition that could impact on their ability to meet the requirements of the position they have been selected for. It also allows for the identification of any reasonable adjustment that would enable them to undertake this safely without further detriment to themselves or others, which is required by The Disability Discrimination Act 1995. It should not be used as a method for excluding those with existing health conditions if the condition has no bearing on the role they will be undertaking, but should be specific and relevant to the work environment, for example it may not be appropriate to employ someone who suffers with eczema if they are going to have regular contact with a skin irritant or skin allergen.
The level of screening undertaken will vary from organisation to organisation and depend on the hazards associated with the working environment. It can take various forms, from verifying the number of days' absence with the previous employer to requiring the employee to undergo a thorough medical examination. |
