What is health surveillance?

Occupational Health Consultancy is a team of impartial and independent specialist Occupational Health Nurses and Doctors who carry out health surveillance. This could be because this is required under Law or that best practice within your industry requires this assessment.

Occupational Health is a specialist area that undertakes assessing employees health whilst at work. We work with the employer and employee to help minimise the risk of ill health at work. Health surveillance allows for early identification of ill health and helps identify any corrective action needed.

This could include employees completing questionnaires, inclusive of having tests such as hearing tests, lung function tests or attending for specific medicals due to the specifics of the job role.

Health surveillance is governed by statute and/or HSE guidelines. However, the frequency and types of surveillance should be entirely governed by exposures to health hazards.

Employees have a legal responsibility under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other health and safety laws to comply with requests for health surveillance.  If there are concerns about undertaking this, this should be discussed with the employer.
